Behind the Bricks: The Story of The Blockbuster Builder
Hello, and welcome to The Blockbuster Builder. My name is Neil, and I’m the builder behind this site.
Some passions never really leave you. For me, that has always been the magic of two things: epic movies and a box of LEGO bricks. I’ve loved LEGO since I was a kid (my mum tells me it was the only thing that would keep me quiet!), and while I don’t remember the specific sets, that feeling of creativity never faded.
But my journey back to the brick as an adult is a very personal one.
How a Little Green Jedi Saved Me
About 15 years ago, I found myself in a very dark place, battling severe depression. While I was getting help, I knew I needed something more—a focus, an escape from the constant overthinking that was going on in my head.
During a shopping trip, I casually mentioned to my husband that “LEGO was cool.” He held onto that simple comment. That Christmas, he surprised me with my first ‘adult’ LEGO set: the Star Wars Yoda (75255).
For the hours I spent building that set, the world outside, and the noise inside my head, just melted away. It was a form of active mindfulness. From that moment on, building became my therapy and a renewed passion. Thankfully, those dark days are long behind me now, but I can say with 100% certainty that LEGO was a fundamental part of my healing. This website is, in many ways, a tribute to that little green Jedi.
From a Healing Hobby to a Cinematic Passion
My collection has grown a bit since then (much to my husband’s bewilderment as he wonders where on earth it’s all going!). My passion truly lies where cinema and the brick collide.
I’m a huge fan of the Star Wars movies—literally every one of them—and Yoda will always be my favourite character. I also love the magic of Disney, with Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast at the top of my list, and the pure fantasy of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Even at 43, I wish I could do magic, and these sets are the next best thing!
I started The Blockbuster Builder to share my love for these incredible sets with a wider community. But I also hope that by sharing my own story, it might resonate with others who are looking for their own creative escape.
I believe LEGO will always stand the test of time. It keeps the mind active, it challenges you, and it leaves you with a stunning piece of art to display. It will certainly always have a place in my heart.
Thank you for being here and sharing in this adventure.
